Townley, L.R. (1989), Water balance modelling of regional aquifers : problems and possibilities, Hydrology and Water Resources Symposium, The Institution of Engineers, Australia, Christchurch, New Zealand, November 1989, 320-324.

Major difficulties in determining the water balance of regional aquifers include problems of scale and problems of variability in aquifer properties and recharge. The aquifer flow equation is shown to depend on a quantity described as 'net vertical flux', rather than on recharge alone. Qualitative guidance is provided on the scale of discretisation of an aquifer flow model and the scale at which net vertical flux should be estimated. Suggestions are made for methods which may allow a more systematic approach to regional water balance modelling in the future.
